Library Lawn

As far as crazy events go, I have always wondered what it would take to actually get expelled. Well, let me tell you, getting expelled is actually not very hard and it can even happen as a result of a little graffiti drawing on any school building. However, sometimes courageous students choose to do acts so bold and often stupid that they cannot go unnoticed or unpunished. One of my friends, lets call him Greg, has in fact committed such an act.

It was a warm weekend night (one of the few in San Francisco) in the spring semester of '06. Greg and two of his friends, let’s call them Chris and Kenny, decided to have a few drinks in their dorm room. None of them where of the legal drinking age, so they decided to have a couple of beers in one of their dorm rooms. Don’t ask me how they got the alcohol in the first place. A few beers of course turned into a few more. Before they even realized it was already past mid-night. Needless to say, by then all three of them were drunk and still bored.

Well, most people have a strong desire to go and do something when they are drunk. The problem is that it is usually something rather stupid, and that is exactly what the boys ended up doing. Before I go on, I would like to point out that not only were their actions stupid but they were also very dangerous!!! Anyway, one of them decided that it would be kind of fun to go for a drive. Conveniently, Chris’s car was parked right on campus so there was no hesitation on their part whether this was a worthwhile idea. After cruising around the campus area for a while, they came to the conclusion that they needed to do something more exciting. This is where the story gets crazy because Kenny says “why don’t we try driving through campus instead of around it?” Greg was the one driving at the time, and he thought that it was a genius idea, so he drove over the curb, past the library and straight onto the lawn in front of it. After doing a few crazy circles that left very visible marks on the lawn they sped off. I’m sure there was a lot of laughter in the car when they got back on Golden Gate Avenue. However, when the high of the adrenaline started wearing off, the boys decided to repeat the procedure. So once again, they drove over the curb straight towards the library lawn. Before they even completed one circle, the public safety arrived. In fact, there were several public safety vehicles, so there was no point to run or in their case drive off. As you can imagine, all three boys got in trouble for vandalizing school property while under the influence of alcohol. Chris and Kenny got placed on probation and Greg got expelled since he was the one driving. Talk about going out with a bang! Years later, all three are still friends and laugh when they recall the incident.

Freshman Haunting

Back when I was a freshman I remember hearing ghost stories from the girls that lived in the Hayes-Healy dorm. Needless to say, like most people I didn’t believe a word of it for the longest time. However, later in the year I became friends with one of the girls that lived on the supposed haunted floor. For confidentiality reasons, let’s call her Meg. Even after hearing the stories I'll admit, I was still skeptical, however, after hearing it from her roommate and almost everyone from her floor I had to give in. According to Meg, the ghost that was haunting her room was of a girl that used to live in the dorm roughly fifty years ago.

After doing some research, Meg found out that a girl hung herself out the window in the room she used to live in and as a result it was boarded up for a few years. Eventually, the school did a renovation on the building and the room was again available for students to live in. So, in fall of ’05, unsuspecting Meg ended up living in that very room. At first, she thought that her roommate, who was her friend from high school, was playing practical jokes on her. She said that throughout the semester her stuff kept getting rearranged and sometimes disappearing altogether. Once, she even found her flip flops in the microwave. But it wasn’t her roommate because weird things would constantly happen to her as well. Both girls said that the TV would turn on by itself at all hours of day and night and once both of their beds were moved about a foot away from the wall while they were gone. Both of them said that it felt like their blankets were being pulled off during the night and their lights would flicker all the time. At first, Meg decided that she was being silly and called in the electrician to look at the lights but he said that the lights were perfectly fine. Out of desperation, Meg and her roommate ended up calling a priest who, believe it or not, performed an exorcism that was supposed to get rid of the ghost. Things only got worse after that. Meg said that after a while she felt like she was constantly being watched. I imagine by then she was completely paranoid. So, she ended up finding one of the girls that used to live in the same room the year before. It turns out that very similar things used to happen to her as well. Both Meg and her roommate requested to be moved to a different room after the first semester and the room stayed abandoned till the end of the year.

I realize the fact that one of our freshman dorms is haunted is hard to believe. So, I encourage all the skeptics to find out for themselves and explore the eighth floor of the Hayes-Healy Hall.

Creating Legends

University of San Francisco is a medium sized Jesuit university located in the fabulous city of San Francisco, California. To some, it might appear quite conservative but the truth is that there have been many crazy and bizarre incidents that have taken place over the years.
Trust me, I happen to know a thing or two about that. As a fourth year student at USF I have personally experienced some of the craziest moments of my life at this school. In fact, most of the people I know, would agree that this school can get pretty crazy or at least that some of the people at this school are pretty crazy. Even after moving off campus, most of the people I know have continued to have adventures on pretty regular basis.

For those of you already enrolled, I'm sure you have heard of at least a few such incidents for yourselves.
For those of you that are thinking of applying, this is your chance to decide whether USF meets your party criteria. There has never been any real documentation of this type, so I think it's time to change that and tell the story of what really goes on at a college campus.

P.S. I have absolutely no intention of getting anyone in trouble so I will change all the names of the people that have participated in these events. After all, this space is primarily creates in order to preserve some of the legendary adventures that our daring students have experienced over the years...
